How to get to a website when your anti-virus thinks it's dangerous, and you don't

In this issue, we're going to discuss a situation that may be particularly relevant to some Dr.Web users: namely, how to get to a site deemed unreliable by the anti-virus if the risk seems worth it.

Recall that the HTTP-monitor SpIDer Gate is a key Dr.Web Security Space component, protecting users from exposure to non-recommended and downright malicious sites. Enabled by default, this module uses a database that gets over 100,000 new addresses added to it every month. This allows the anti-virus to block access to websites regarded as hazardous by Doctor Web.

Even though this feature operates automatically on protected computers and requires no configuration, it is still possible to manually add site addresses onto the exceptions lists to prevent them from being blocked.

But before we tell you how this is done, let us voice our reservations: Under no circumstances should you add torrent and file sharing sites and sites hosting illegal software and video copies to that list, no matter how much you'd like to. Despite the fact that the anti-virus will still scan sites on the exceptions list, the risk of getting your system infected increases manifold whenever you visit them.

Let's consider various online course sites as an example of websites that Dr.Web may regard as dangerous, but users still want to visit. Although sites of this kind can indeed offer access to some really good courses, they often lack thorough moderation. As a result, they end up hosting all sorts of dubious content.

The Anti-virus Times recommends

If you have found yourself in a situation when Dr.Web does not let you visit a site that you are certain you absolutely must visit, do the following:

  1. Right-click on the Dr.Web icon to open the drop-downmenuDr.Web menu icon #drweb and select Security Center.
  2. In the newly opened window, click on the Exclusions tile.

To go to the exceptions settings.

  1. Make sure that Dr.Web is running in administrator mode (the padlock icon at the bottom of the application window is "open"Dr.Web menu icon #drweb). Otherwise, click on the padlockDr.Web menu icon #drweb.
  2. Click on the Websites tile.

This window contains the list of sites that will remain accessible regardless of the SpIDer Gate (HTTP-monitor) settings. If the option “Block non-recommended websites” is enabled, you can still make certain sites accessible by adding them to the exceptions list. Sites on this list will be accessible, but Dr.Web will still scan them.

To configure the site exceptions list

  1. Right-click on the Dr.Web icon to open the drop-down menuDr.Web menu icon #drweb and select Security Center.
  2. In the window that opens, click on the Exclusions tile.
  3. Click on the Websites tile.

By default, the list is empty. If a site address (such as www.example.com) is added onto the exceptions list, it will remain accessible regardless of the other SpIDer Gate settings. Note though that if the site is added to the Parental Control's blacklist as well as to the exceptions, it won't be accessible.
